Sarge by Bey Deckard5/24/2023 ![]() The rally was the latest in a number of same-sex marriage protests seen in Brisbane in recent years, and according to activist and researcher Sharon Dane, the numbers and passions of those involved seems to have increased, giving a clear message that the time for equality is now and that they will fight for as long as it takes. With the formalities out of the way, the masses took to the streets of Brisbane in a colourful and vocal display of unity that stopped traffic and received a largely positive reaction from the public, many clapping as the protesters went past. At the conclusion of the speeches, Rev Leigh Neighbour of the Metropolitan Community Church presided over three same-sex marriage ceremonies, although none of them will be legally recognised. ![]() Perhaps it was the short lead time but it showed that the parties were not willing to engage with the LGBTI communities in that way. ![]()
